September News 2019
TASSO Management Committee are delighted to endorse Griffith University’s, Suzie the Scientist and Millie the Mathematician books that uniquely links the home-reading process with the Australian Curriculum: Science and Mathematics.
Members of the Management Committee were fortunate to have a look at the books, to which some of the following comments were made:
  • These are fantastic!
  • Suzie & Millie should be in all Primary Schools.
  • It is great having relevant Australian content that aligns with what is being taught.
  • What a great way for families to learn together.
  • Wish these had been around when my kids were younger, they are way more interesting than what my kids brought home to read.
TASSO is unequivocally thrilled that a special offer has been extended to Tasmanian School Associations who are looking at supporting students and families in their school by increasing literacy resources available.
Purchasing Suzie the Scientist and Millie the Mathematician could be a targeted fundraiser or the perfect opportunity to partner with a community organisation with a keen interest in science, maths and literacy.

Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians
On August 21st, TASSO Representatives attended the forum on the review of the Melbourne Declaration at Mount Nelson organised by the Education Council of Australian Governments.  The Education Council is responsible for providing information and resources to address Education issues of national significance. The forum at Mount Nelson was a series of forums throughout Australia and built upon what the Council had heard so far from submissions and a National Forum earlier in 2019.

Tasmanian school students were given the opportunity earlier in the day to add their voice to what the next ten years of Australian Education should look like and include. Some of their ideas can be seen on the graffiti board below.
Some of the topics discussed and work-shopped included: Lifelong Learning; Early Childhood Education; Skills for the Future; and, Well-being, culture & Social Participation in Education.
We look forward to the final strategy which will underpin the next decade of Australian in Education.

NAPLAN Stakeholders Briefing
A representative from TASSO and the Presidents of the Australian Education Union (Tas. Branch) and the Tasmanian Principals Association attended a stakeholders briefing with the Department of Education Performance and Review team. An overview of Tasmanian NAPLAN results for 2019 was given and discussed. Online testing, apparent connectivity issues, the benefits of tailoring questions to a student’s answers and online allowing schools to make the test more inclusive for students.
TASSO still holds fast to the belief that NAPLAN should be reviewed and that under no circumstances should the results be used to create leagues tables which compare school against school. As students receive their results we urge you as parents to, -
Remember that no one student’s life is or should be defined by the results of a NAPLAN test, the results of NAPLAN should be used to strengthen a student’s future learning.

Education, Science, Research and the Antarctic Industry Advisory Council
TASSO President Nigel Jones was invited and attended the first Education, Science, Research & the Antarctic Industry Advisory Council called by Josh Willie MP Shadow Minister for Education and Early Years. The participants at the meeting consisted of a cross-section of representatives from a variety of organisations and identified existing gaps in our education system and provided an opportunity to discuss potential solutions. We have been informed the Council will meet regularly to develop policies.

The climate and the earth's future is becoming a bigger and bigger issue for all of us, but it's students all around the world standing together and making the most noise.

As seen on their website, they speak of the importance placed of a child's education and the ability to gain knowledge and skills to change the world for the better in the future. However that is seen to be too long to wait for these students as real changes and decisions are happening now, in regard to energy production and associated carbon emissions.

The students are exercising one of the very few powers they have and that is to hold school strikes in the hope that politicians will notice them and hear their concerns.

Here at TASSO we work to support our students and this encompasses their personal development over the course of their lives. Therefore TASSO supports the School Strike 4 Climate effort.

The following is an excerpt of the TASSO policy
'The aim of education is to help the individual to develop their full potential as a person and as a member of the society, to adapt and grow in the rapidly changing circumstances of modern living.'
