Message from TASSO President
As you know, a state election will be held on Saturday 19 July 2025.
It’s an unexpected election, but just like any other, it’s a good time to speak up. I encourage you to tell local candidates what matters most to your school community.
Individuals are always welcome to write to candidates personally. Never underestimate the influence of your vote. Letting a candidate know they won’t have your support unless they back something that matters to you can be a strong motivator for action.
If your committee agrees, your School Association can write to candidates or the department to share your community’s views, as allowed under your constitution. Be careful to focus on ideas and policies, not support for specific candidates or parties. You can decide this at a meeting or by a circulating resolution (like an email decision). DECYP staff, including the Principal and staff representatives, will likely abstain from the vote on this due to government policy, so make sure their abstention is noted in the minutes.
You might like to:
- Ask candidates to explain their policies and how these affect your school
- Call for more support and funding for government schools
- Ask candidates to commit to funding specific local initiatives, especially if they’ve previously promised to
- Highlight local projects your school community believes are important and explain the benefits
The candidates for each division are listed on the TEC website.
All the best, John Allan
TASSO President
