TASSO calls on Government to adopt bullying inquiry recommendations

The Tasmanian Association of State School Organisations (TASSO) is calling on the Tasmanian Government to adopt all 33 recommendations of the Parliamentary Inquiry into Discrimination and Bullying in Tasmanian Schools.

TASSO President Damien Rhind said the Inquiry had heard from students, families, educators and other stakeholders, providing a substantial body of evidence and a clear foundation for reform.

“The Inquiry has examined the experiences of those affected by bullying and discrimination and identified recommendations to improve how these issues are prevented and addressed in our schools,” Mr Rhind said.

“We have the evidence, we have the recommendations, and now we need the Government to act.”

Years of Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey data reinforce the need for change, with bullying remaining a persistent concern for Tasmanian students despite some improvements.

“Bullying and discrimination can have serious consequences for a student’s wellbeing, engagement and education. Every child deserves to feel safe, respected and included at school.

“These are issues that directly affect the lives and educational outcomes of young people. They deserve the Government’s attention and commitment.”

TASSO is calling for all 33 recommendations to be adopted in full, with appropriate resourcing, clear implementation timeframes and measurable outcomes.

“Families need confidence that if bullying occurs, their children will be heard, supported and protected, and that schools have the resources to respond effectively.

“The Inquiry has provided a clear pathway for improvement. It’s time for the Government to act on it.”
